国際的写真家集団「マグナム・フォト」正会員を務めるアメリカ人フォトグラファー、アレック・ソス（Alec Soth）の作品集。ロバート・フランクやウィリアム・エグルストンに次ぎ、ロードトリップ写真で多くの写真家に影響を与えたアレック・ソス。「Sleeping by the Mississippi」は、作者にとって初写真集でありながらその名を人々の記憶に刻んだ名作であり、2004年にSteidlより刊行。今回、新たに2点未収録作品が加えられた復刻版として、MACKより出版された。
アメリカ・ミシシッピ川沿いのロードトリップを中心として、アメリカのアイコン的役割を果たすが故に寧ろ忘れられがちな「サード・コースト（第3の海岸）」を捉えている。その地で生きる人々や風景、建物の中を大判のカラー写真で贅沢かつ丁寧に、豊かに描き出している。五感に訴えかけてくるような被写体の生々しさとともに、一貫して孤独や切望、幻想といった人間の内側が物悲しくも露わになっている。
アメリカ人フォトグラファーのロバート・フランク（Robert Frank）の代表作であり写真史を語るにおいて欠かせない一冊「The Americans」のように、「Sleeping by the Mississippi」はドキュメンタリー要素と詩的な感性を融合させている。本の主題よりもその繊細で整理された構成や図版の美しさが際立っており、厳格なコンセプトやイデオロギーをもって一冊に綴じられているのではなく、アメリカンスピリット由来の心の底から湧き出る旅への衝動から生まれたシリーズであり、写真史においてその時代を語る上で非常に重要な写真集の1つである。

Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth's Sleeping by the Mississippi captures America's iconic yet oft-neglected ‘third coast’.
