国際的写真家集団「マグナム・フォト」正会員を務めるアメリカ人フォトグラファー、アレック・ソス（Alec Soth）の作品集。ロバート・フランクやウィリアム・エグルストンに次ぎ、ロードトリップ写真で多くの写真家に影響を与えたアレック・ソス。その名を人々の記憶に刻んだ処女作『SLEEPING BY THE MISSISSIPPI』の次作を制作するにあたり、世界三大河川の一つであるミシシッピ川に続き、本作ではカナダのオンタリオ州とアメリカのニューヨーク州とを分ける国境に位置する世界三大瀑布の一つ "ナイアガラの滝" を主題に選び、2006年に初版がドイツの出版社「Steidl」より刊行。本書はその復刻版として「MACK」より出版。前作と同様、主題に自然を選びながら、その雄大さや驚異というよりむしろ欲求や願望といった人間の内面が色濃く写し出されている。

二年間に渡り滝のアメリカ側とカナダ側双方から8x10の大判カメラで撮影した写真には、新婚夫婦や全裸の恋人たち、モーテルの駐車場、質屋で売られている結婚指輪などが収められており、どれも緻密に組み立てられ細かなディテールまでもが美しく写る。また、全編を通じてそこかしこに挿入されているラブレターは被写体となった人々が書いたものだが、十代の片思い、職場恋愛、失恋、自殺などそれぞれのエピソードが綴られているのを読み取ることができる。アイルランド人作家のオスカー・ワイルドは、ナイアガラの滝そのものについてこう記していた。「巨大なこの滝の眺めは、アメリカの結婚生活において、最大とは言わないまでも最初に味わう失望 － がっかりする出来事の一つであるに違いない。」本作において我々は、情熱と失意のどちらも感じとるだろう。アレック・ソスは現代における愛を卓越した表現力で描写しており、余響となって残る。

In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth turned his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. As with his photographs of the Mississippi, Soth’s pictures of Niagara are less about natural wonder than human desire. “I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers,” says Soth, “the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion.”

Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls using a large-format 8x10 camera, the photographs are rigorously composed and richly detailed. Soth depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots and pawn shop wedding rings. Throughout the book, Soth has interspersed a number of love letters from the subjects he photographed. We read about teenage crushes, workplace affairs, heartbreak and suicide. Oscar Wilde wrote of the Falls, “The sight of the stupendous waterfall must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest, disappointments in American married life.” In Soth’s Niagara, we see both the passion and the disappointment. His pictures are a remarkable portrayal of modern love and it’s aftermath.
